Henry Cavill, who is he? I hear you utter. Well, all will be revealed, this 27 year old British actors career is about to take off, quite literally! Producers Chris Nolan and Zack Snyder have decided to cast Henry Cavill for their upcoming Superman movie. It’s a little known fact that Cavill was almost cast as James Bond a little while back, but lost out by a whisker to the more experienced and mature British actor, Daniel Craig.
Contrary to James Bond, youth is an asset for the role of Superman it would seem. Landing this role in Warner Bros/DC Comics Superman: Man Of Steel will have been a huge victory for Cavill, after losing out on the leading role to Christian Bale for the movie Batman Begins (2005). This casting proves that Hollywood producers often look abroad for their most masculine roles.
The competition was fierce for this much prized role, and now that it’s his, he can settle down and prepare to give his very best performance. Roles such as these can really catapult a young actors career in Tinsel town.
According to reports, Matthew Goode and Hoover-lover A rnie Hammer were strong contenders. The role of Lois Lane is still up for grabs. The Playlist made the following suggestions in October last year: Rebecca Hall, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan, Emily Blunt, Kate Mara and Elisabeth Banks.
Since his boarding school days at Buckingham’s Stowe school, Cavill has been acting. Laguna (2001), with Joe Mantegna was his first movie, directed by Dennis Berry. Following this was The Count Of Monte Cristo (2002), Tristan & Isolde (2006), Stardust (2007) and Whatever Works (2009). To top this off, he has two movies in the pipeline, Immortals and The Cold Light Of Day.
Immortals is a Greek-inspired fantasy action drama directed by Tarsem Singh. He played Theseus, along with an all-star cast including, Mickey Rourke as King Hyperion, Stephen Dorff as Stavros, John Hurt as old Zeus, Frido Pinto as Phaedra and Isabel Lucas as Athena. In The Cold Light Of Day he played an american who accidentally stumbles on a conspiracy whilst in the process of rescuing his kidnapped family, Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver co-starred.
Superman: Man of Steel is slated for release in December 2012.
