The popular, eclectic band TV On The Radio announced via the bands website today that their bassist Gerard Smith had lost his fight with lung cancer and died on Wednesday, April 20th. TV On The Radio announced about a month ago that Smith was battling cancer, but was responding well to treatment, and they remained hopeful that Smith would be recovered enough to join them as the tour rolled on.
We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly.

The band had just released their fourth studio album Nine Types of Light on April 12th to stellar reviews and had recently kicked off their U.S. promotional tour to support the release. The band also announced in tandem via their website the cancellation of five previously scheduled upcoming shows on their U.S. tour, but the band does plan to continue the tour after these five cancelled concert dates.
TV On The Radio has cancelled the following five previously scheduled shows on their U.S. tour:
- April 20 St. Andrew Halls, Detroit MI
- April 22 Metro, Chicago IL
- April 23 First Ave, Minneapolis MN
- April 24 First Ave, Minneapolis MN
- April 26 Ogden, Denver CO
Smith had been with the band since 2005 and contributed his reverberating bass to the band’s releases, Return to Cookie Mountain (2006), Dear Science (2008), and Nine Types of Light (2011).
