HBO Films is planning the production of a TV movie about Phil Spector. Bette Midler has already signed up for the leading role, which could see the singer, actress and comedian star alongside another Hollywood A-Lister, Al Pacino. The cast will also be joined by Jeffrey Tambor. Oscar winning director David Mamet will direct the movie.
The movie will center on music producer Phil Spector and defence attorney Linda Kenney Baden, (to be played by Midler). Baden was Spector’s legal representative during Spector’s first murder trial.
Tambor will play the role of Bruce Cutler, who was also on Spector’s legal defence team. Tambor has worked for HBO before, playing Hank Kingsley on The Larry Sanders Show.
The production will be a joint effort between Al Pacino, Director David Mamet and Barry Levinson. Levinson has worked with Pacino before, directing him in You Don’t Know Jack (2010). That movie won an Emmy award and was nominated for 13 others.
If the film gets the thumbs up, it will be Midler’s most high profile TV movie role ever since her appearance in Gypsy (1993), a CBS production that got her an Emmy nomination.
