All Time Low’s new release Dirty Work was two years in the making and it shines because of this. Choosing to calculate quality over hurrying the rising popularity, All Time Low is actually going much higher. Polished punk rock pop sounds pretty good when aged to such standards as this. Starting out with “You Want Me Dead”, All Time Low shows quite a bit of spunk. I like these echoey vocals and the wanting and getting are two different things attitude. “I Feel Like Dancing” is pop dance punk. If that is an obscure kind of song, so be it. This does have a summer party feel that is hard to beat. “Forget About it” emulates the attitude that these songs are fun to be a part of in a crazy world, and that makes the music shine. You feel part of the fun on this release.
“Guts” is a fine example of how an up and coming band shows how it should be done. “Time Bomb” is jangling pop punk and doing it quite catchy in the process. ”Just the Way I’m Not” is a good boom boom drum song. Here come the pop punk guitars rolling over me. Quite a diverse sound in one single song. A seminar on how to impress the listener. “Under the Paper Moon” could be treading on dangerous ground at it rocks enough to set paper moons on fire easily. “Return the Favor” starts out acoustic only to crush the punk rock pop sound big time. Interesting piano ending.
“No Idea” is another example of a release with little weakness, as this is another great song. “A Daydream Away” is more pop than most, but shows a mid-tempo song can fit in here pretty good. “That Girl” is All Time Low at a high. I like this one big time, and liked it best. “Heroes” rocks quite readily and boasts of being talked about over and over. “Get Down on Your Knees” is pleading for love in a totally rocking sort of way. “My Only One” is an infectious cut that shouts “hear me!” “Merry X-Mas Kiss My A&%” should not be funny, but it is coy and knows it. In spite of this, its a gem. “Time Bomb-Acoustic” is an interesting variation on a great song. Four and a half stars is the rating here. All Time Low is Zackary Merrick, Alex Gaskarth, Rian Dawson, and Jack Barakat.
