It’s recently been reported that Pop Diva Madonna will be returning to the director’s chair for only the second time. Her first directorial effort was Filth and Wisdom (2008), which starred Eugene Hutz, Holly Weston, Vicky McClure and Richard E. Grant. The film was a Comedy/Drama/Musical/Romance that centered on the life of a Ukrainian immigrant by the name of A.K. who earned a living as a cross-dressing dominatrix in order to finance his dream of becoming a Rock star. The film was hammered by critics and met with mostly negative reviews.
Her next directorial work to be titled W.E. is to be released this year and is already being pre-sold at the Berlin Film Festival. Madonna will also pen the screenplay with the help of her close friend Alex Keshishian, who directed Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991) and With Honors (1994).
W.E. will be an historical drama set in the 1930’s and follows the controversial relationship between King Edward VIII and American socialite Wallis Simpson, whom he eventually married. The affair was deeply controversial not only constitutionally, but also politically, because of Simpson’s background. King Edward was actually forced to abdicate the throne before he could marry her. In his tumultuous abdication speech he said, “I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as King as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love.”
It seems there’s plenty of romantic material for Madonna to get her teeth into here.
