June 27, 2011

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and SciencesAt the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the real bosses are the board of governors. They have the powers to elect the president, presently Tom Sherak, and he of course oversees the Oscar show through approving the hosts and hiring the producers. The new co-chairmen at AMPAS, Dawn Hudson and Ric Robertson, were themselves both approved by the board as a replacement for the departing executive Bruce Davis. They also approved the new voting rules to come into effect next year, as well as a new board members.

The Academy is just now introducing four new governors to join the powerful posse. Those newcomers will be producer Gale Ann Hurd, film editor Michael Tronick, Composer David Newman and cinematographer Richard P. Crudo. The existing governors staying on to serve are animation executive and director John Lasseter, actress Annette Bening, sound man Don Hall, VFX supervisor Craig Barron, art director Jeffrey Kurland, veteran ex-studio chairman Robert Rehme and screenwriter Phil Alden Robinson, who will be producing the governors Awards this year.

Returning to the board will be three film industry big shots, veteran publicist Cheryl Boone Isaacs, director Paul Mazursky and documentary and feature director Michael Apted.

The Academy has a total of 15 Branches, 14 of which are represented by three governors. They can in turn serve up to three consecutive three-year terms. The terms are staggered, so each Branch can elect or re-elect one governor each year. The Hairstylist and Makeup Artist branches are represented by a single governor.

Governors not up for reelection, but who will continue to serve on the AMPAS board are: Jim Gianopulos and Tom Sherak, Executives Branch; Anne V. Coates and Mark Goldblatt, Film Editors Branch; Tom Hanks and Ed Begley, Actors Branch; Leonard Engelman, Hairstylists and Makeup Artists Branch; Bruce Broughton and Charles Fox, Music Branch; Mark Johnson and Hawk Koch, Producers Branch; Rob Friedman and Marvin Levy, Public Relations Branch; Bill Kroyer and Jon Bloom, Short Films and Feature Animation Branch; Kevin O’Connell and Curt Behlmer, Sound Branch; Bill Taylor and Richard Edlund, Visual Effects Branch; Frank Pierson and James L. Brooks, Writers Branch.
