Primus – Green Naugahyde: A Review

Primus - Green NaugahydeI will call Primus’ new release Green Naugahyde the Green Album. Clay people are back, which is part of the Primus aura. I couldn’t wait to hear this when I saw it was coming. I am in Primus heaven. Put this on your Christmas list, it is a winner. Les Claypool on bass and vocals, Larry LaLonde on guitars and Jay Lane on drums are back big time. “Eternal Consumption Engine” is classic Primus. This has a lot of the deep throated mumbling found throughout this release. The kicker here is the line bemoaning “everything’s made in China.” “Green Ranger” is short and sweet, featuring more vocal grumbling which Primus is long on at this time.

“Lee Van Cleef” is a fun little song with a nice jam. A bass intro is expected here, but it delivers big time.”Salmon Men” is yet another strange cartoon theme song which is part of the Primus aura. “Tragedy’s A’ Comin” is prime Primus with some weird effected vocals along with normal vocals. This is really great  and it could only be a Primus song. Welcome back! Nice bass Les!!!!!!! “HOINFODAMAN” also has Primus written all over it and sounds like no other group.

“Jilly’s On Smack” has a classic guitar sound on it, and features a weird ambience I like as well. This is a stunning song and on the great side of bizarre. My favorite on here. “Eyes of the Squirrel” has an awesome effected bass guitar and electric guitar with drums Primus style. Another of my favorites. “Hennepin Crawler” is another weird, wild, and wooly song that really Rocks!!!! “Prelude to a Crawl” is a pretty good bass solo with ambience song. This is worthy of 4 and 1/2 stars. It is arguably their best, as well as one of the year’s best.
