Hot Chelle Rae – ‘Whatever’: A Review

December 2, 2011

“Tonight, Tonight” from Hot Chelle Rae’s new release ‘Whatever’ has been available in several different versions for awhile. It has also been a chart favorite this year. Following in those footsteps could be the match up with New Boyz’ “I Like it Like That”. “Tonight, Tonight” is a great example of rap being good in a pop song. “Honestly” is a “my clothes are outside, but I will move on” lyrically kind of song. “Keep You With Me” is about being with someone in spirit even when they are far away. “Radio” with Bei Maejor is a feel good catchy song. A simple electric piano and a beat is quite good here. Make a connection over the miles with this song.

The title track says it all. I do not care or the operative word is “underachiever.” Fortunately, the songs are not all this attitude. “Forever Unstoppable” is a good example of the complete opposite of this, where there is long term focus. I guess we are all capable of doing a 180 when we are bored or going through the motions. “Why Don’t You Love Me” is a dream song where Ryan is in love with just a friend. Nice duet here with Demi Lovato. “Downtown Girl” is a “bright lights-party girl-going out” anthem.

“Beautiful Freaks” has an out there in the neon feel to it. This is a subject they make a living on. They do it impressively catchy in the process. “The Only One” says lyrically, “You are the only one for me.” There are some nice sounds and excellent beats to get you going. This is fluffy at times, but a strong four and a third star release from Hot Chelle Rae. They are from Nashville, Tennessee. The members are: Ryan Keith Follesse (lead vocals, guitar), Nash Overstreet (lead guitar, vocals), Ian Sebastian Keaggy ,(bass, vocals), and Jamie Follesse (drums).
