Musical Stocking Stuffers — Obscure Classics — Single Song Recommendations

If you only hear one Duke Robillard song, make it the lilting “Pony Blues” — my favorite song by a great musician that should be bigger. The Band’s “Christmas Must Be Tonight” as heard on Sirius XM Radio’s Holly channel is another must have. “Grim Travelers” is an excellent song you probably never heard of by Bruce Cockburn. If you only have one Psychedelic Furs song, “Love My Way” is my choice. Golden Earring’s “Just Like Vince Taylor” (USA’s B side to “Radar Love”) is a long time favorite of mine.

A triple treat of songs from Kelly Clarkson’s hits release would be “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”, “People Like Us” and the single “Catch My Breath” — all excellent. Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” is a big time classic. The obscure Top 40 hits “Run For Home” by Lindisfarne and Sneaker’s “More Than Just the Two of us” are totally awesome. Give Mike + the Mechanics a big time listen with “Nobody’s Perfect”.

“God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys is one of Paul McCartney’s favorite songs, and he wrote some darned good songs. Sang by the late great Carl Wilson, I’ve seen this and more live when “Kokomo” (another Carl vocal) was out and John Stamos was the drummer. Jim Steinman’s “Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through” with Rory Dowd on vocals or Meatloaf’s version round out a really strong playlist.
